Europe’s Plan to Reduce Dependency on American Tech

On June 3, 2026, European Union officials announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing reliance on American technology. The plan seeks to enhance Europe’s economic prospects and geopolitical security amidst tensions with the Trump administration.

The strategy includes increased government participation to accelerate data center construction and boost the semiconductor sector. It advocates for European governments and businesses to prioritize technology purchases from local suppliers, especially in security-critical areas.

European leaders are worried about the dependence on American technology in fields like artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and semiconductors. Concerns revolve around potential vulnerabilities or a ‘kill switch’ that the Trump administration or future US presidents might exploit.

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, emphasized the need for technological independence to ensure the stability and security of vital sectors such as healthcare and energy.

The technology sovereignty package may introduce protectionist policies, potentially exacerbating strains with the Trump administration, especially after disputes over trade, the Ukraine conflict, and Greenland’s control. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has previously warned retaliatory actions in response to Europe’s digital policies.

Efforts to establish a trade pact between Europe and the US are ongoing, with President Trump setting a July 4 deadline for its completion. The European Parliament is scheduled to vote on the sovereignty package in mid-June, just before the deadline.
