Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams encountered a hostile reception at a meeting in Wisconsin as he promoted a proposed AI data center. Audience members interjected with boos and insults during an eight-minute discussion, where some told Adams he belongs “in prison.” This comment seemed to refer to his past legal issues regarding a dismissed federal corruption case.

Since stepping down as mayor, Adams has been involved with several real estate technology firms, reportedly closing 80% of the deals he pursues. He attended the Wisconsin meeting representing PNK Group, which plans to develop a 209-acre data center at a defunct paper mill site on the Wisconsin River.

Adams stated, “Whether we like it or not, folks, data centers are going to be here,” in defense of the proposal. However, many in the audience voiced opposition, with concerns ranging from potential water use to local impact. Comments like “You’re here to steal our water!” and “Put it in your backyard!” reflected strong community resistance.

“Anyone can heckle, but not everybody can communicate,”

Adams said, attempting to engage constructively. He recounted a personal experience where AI technology aided his diabetes diagnosis, aiming to highlight technology’s potential benefits. Yet, his mention of technology received more boos from the crowd.

One attendee tried to calm the situation by saying, “Let him talk!” However, Adams had difficulty addressing the critical audience. In a statement to Fox News Digital, his chief communications officer Todd Shapiro claimed that the media’s portrayal of the event was incomplete. He asserted that many attendees thanked Adams and engaged in discussions after his presentation.

Shapiro emphasized Adams’ role in promoting economic opportunities through responsible AI and data center initiatives. He stated that Adams supports policies fostering investment and job creation, aiming to benefit American communities.
