Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, will postpone his court appearance until he completes a mental health competency evaluation. This decision comes after his arrest for allegedly shooting his mother, Mia, causing multiple gunshot wounds at their home in Ashburn, Virginia.

The 27-year-old was taken into custody on charges including malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office.

A statement from Elijah’s public defender cited significant mental health issues, indicating that Elijah cannot currently assist in his defense adequately.

A mental health competency evaluation has been approved, with a motion for another mental health evaluation being temporarily withdrawn. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 9, shortly before the Chiefs start the 2026 NFL season against the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update on Mia’s condition, stating that she is improving and has left the ICU. Eric Bieniemy remains with her during this recovery period.

After his arrest, Elijah was taken to the Loudon County Adult Detention Center and is held without bond. Meanwhile, Chiefs’ coaches and team members are reporting to training camp at Missouri Western State’s campus.

Eric Bieniemy rejoined the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator this offseason, having previously worked with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, and UCLA. During his earlier tenure in Kansas City, he led one of the league’s most successful offenses and contributed to the team’s Super Bowl victories.
