Friendship Bench DC provides a distinctive approach to mental health support. Established as a community resource, the initiative aims to offer a safe space for individuals to discuss their mental health challenges.
David Robinson, left, and Guy Molock have been engaging in weekly conversations for about two months. Molock stated his desire to have had a supportive friend during his youth, which inspired him to become that supportive figure for others.
David Robinson expressed his longing for someone to converse with about his thoughts but felt the opportunity was lacking. He identified certain stigmas linked to conventional therapy, especially among Black men. These included fears of judgment and feelings of shame when sharing personal narratives. Similar emotions surfaced when considering sharing with acquaintances.
