Elderly Texas Driver Receives Unforeseen Support Amid Difficulties

An encounter with an elderly delivery driver in Texas has gained attention after the reason for his continued work became known. Donald Johnson, 81, was delivering lost luggage when he faced a challenge carrying a heavy bag up steep stairs. Erin Howell, a resident of The Colony, witnessed his struggle via her doorbell camera.

Howell offered assistance and discovered that Johnson has been delivering luggage for three years to help cover his wife Josephine’s medical expenses as she battles cancer. According to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, Johnson has struggled to find other employment, thus he continues this line of work as an independent contractor.

It’s the only job that will hire me.

Johnson and his wife have been married for 57 years. Her ongoing medical treatment necessitates his continued employment. Howell shared Johnson’s story online and initiated a fundraiser to ease his financial burdens and allow him to dedicate more time to his wife.

As the story spread, donations and supportive messages poured in. Johnson expressed that he may soon be able to cease working, thanks to the community’s kindness:

I think I’m going to be able to stop working, and that’s amazing. We’re not quite there yet, but very close.

Josephine Johnson also shared how the support has bolstered her spirit during her cancer fight:

I can face it. Some are praying for us, and it’s a joyful feeling.

Unfortunately, the fundraising effort faced a setback. A TikTok video posted by Johnson’s daughter, Amy, revealed that over $700,000 had been raised but wouldn’t reach her parents due to a refund triggered by a technicality.

GoFundMe reported that the organizer account and fundraiser violated its service terms, preventing the funds’ release. The specific violation remains unspecified, but the company’s policies stress donor authenticity and transparency.

Fox News Digital reached out to Amy Johnson and GoFundMe for comments and further details on the matter. The situation illustrates the complexities involved when managing donations through third-party platforms.
