Audio from an emergency dispatch call on June 14, when McConnell was hospitalized, suggested he was “unconscious” and potentially suffering from a heart attack. McConnell’s office has not confirmed these specifics but reiterated gratitude for the support he has received during his recovery.
Senate Republican leaders seek to quell the speculation. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso both communicated with McConnell recently. A spokesperson for Thune confirmed a detailed discussion on national security and other matters. Similarly, Barrasso’s office reported a lengthy conversation about Senate races, scandals, Supreme Court rulings, and upcoming legislative work.
McConnell reportedly remains engaged with his Senate and Kentucky staff, hoping to return to the Senate soon.
