Documentary Delves into the Legacy of ‘Wishbone’

The 1990s saw many memorable canine characters on screen, but few matched the charm of Soccer, the dog who captivated audiences as Wishbone. This talented canine led the PBS series ‘Wishbone’ over 50 episodes and a finale movie titled ‘Wishbone’s Dog Days of the West.’ The show cleverly combined child-friendly humor with earnest adaptations of classic tales like ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,’ ‘Robin Hood,’ and ‘The Phantom of the Opera.’ Kids and adults found much to enjoy in its run.

Many years after the show concluded, the original creators have returned with a documentary, ‘What’s the Story, Wishbone?’ This film explores the show’s rise and unfortunate cancellation, crafted with insights from those who were part of the beginning. The documentary offers an in-depth perspective on ‘Wishbone,’ promising to satisfy fans eagerly awaiting new content.

I spoke with Betty A. Buckley, the producer of both the original series and this new documentary. Buckley shared numerous stories about the making of ‘Wishbone’ and the process involved in creating the documentary. She emphasized the importance of treating the show’s young audience with respect, which contributed to ‘Wishbone’ becoming a cultural staple that remains relevant today.

Unlike some childhood shows that seem outdated now, ‘Wishbone’ retains its charm and quality. It first aired on PBS and still resonates with viewers.

‘What’s the Story, Wishbone’ is currently being aired on Public Television Stations and will be available digitally on June 10.
