Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr, who had an impressive career with the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints, retired after the 2024 season. Though there was speculation about a potential return to football, Carr remained off the field until this week. On Monday, UCLA announced Carr’s new role as a special advisor to the football team.

In his new position, Carr will work with the staff and quarterbacks. He expressed excitement about the opportunity to collaborate with new head coach Bob Chesney and UCLA general manager Darrick Yray, with whom he has a long-standing relationship. Carr stated his eagerness to share his experiences and support the program.

UCLA confirmed Carr would assist with game-planning and quarterback development. During his 11-year NFL career, Carr accumulated 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions, boasting a 92.8 passer rating.

In college, Carr played for Fresno State, where he registered exceptional statistics. Over four seasons, he amassed 12,843 passing yards, 113 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions. In his final two seasons, he led the Bulldogs to a 20-6 record. His last year was particularly notable, with Carr throwing for 5,083 yards, 50 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions. He was honored twice as the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and received the 2013 Sammy Baugh Trophy.
