Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has distanced himself from left-wing streamer Hasan Piker amid backlash over Piker’s controversial comments. Political commentator Stephanie Hamill discussed the political consequences and Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia’s strong condemnation.
This controversy signals rising tensions within the Democratic Party as the 2026 midterm elections approach. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) defended Piker on social media, criticizing Democrats and Republicans for focusing on him instead of pressing issues like healthcare.
“The establishment: Ds, Rs + media, have pivoted from DSA wins to personal attacks, racist dog whistles, symbolic House resolutions, and an obsession with a Twitch streamer. What would happen if they devoted that same attention to the thousands of Americans who die each year because they can’t afford healthcare?” the DSA posted.
Piker, a prominent figure in the progressive movement, claimed that AIPAC influenced Democratic criticism of his comments. While DSA supports him, some Democrats criticize his rhetoric, particularly around Jews.
Sen. Jon Ossoff stated he “unreservedly rejects reckless and dangerous rhetoric suggesting policy advocacy invites violence against the Jewish community or any community.” Ossoff spoke after Piker commented during an August Twitch stream about potential backlash against American Jews.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida, who is Jewish, believes the party cannot accommodate both him and Piker. Moskowitz is among Democrats proposing amendments to a Republican resolution condemning socialism. The GOP’s resolution includes the Trump-backed SAVE America Act, set for a House vote soon.
The Democrats’ amendment kept language condemning socialism but removed election-related provisions. Though not voted on, it denounced socialism as against American values and noted historic communist failures.
Fox News Digital reached out to DSA, Piker, Ossoff, Moskowitz, and other involved parties for further comment.
