Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris recently discussed her memoir ‘107 Days’ at London’s Southbank Centre during the 2025 Literature Festival. Allies and Democratic representatives are questioning the likelihood of her being the top 2028 presidential candidate. While Harris is recognized within the party, there’s debate on whether respect equates to widespread electoral support.
Party Sentiments on Harris’ Future
Fletcher Smith, a past South Carolina state legislator, expressed a sentiment seen among some party members. He noted a desire for new leadership, pointing to a capable younger generation consisting of governors, congresspeople, and senators. “We need to allow others a chance to lead and save democracy,” Smith stated.
Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff pointed out that Harris has not brought anything new since 2024, comparing a potential run to reapplying to college without fresh achievements. Shroff emphasized, “Someone unfamiliar, like a Pritzker, could present new stories to voters.” He acknowledged Harris’ existing support but highlighted voter and donor concern stemming from her past electoral loss.
Mixed Reactions from Democratic Figures
Podcast host Bakari Sellers and Jamal Simmons, former communications director for Harris, reiterated Harris’ talents and existing respect within the party. Yet, Simmons noted the challenge in converting this respect into a second presidential bid. Sellers focused on the importance of Harris’ team strategy, encouraging them to let her showcase her strengths.
Despite uncertainty, some like Ashley Etienne, another former communications director, view Harris as having distinct advantages in a national election. Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas warned against a swift dismissal of Harris, suggesting it could be perceived negatively regarding overlooking a qualified Black woman.
Political Landscape and Future Considerations
Political dynamics suggest a crowded primary, with Democratic leaders like Governor Gavin Newsom indicating non-participation if Harris runs. Harris remains undecided and has yet to declare intentions for the 2028 race, although she acknowledges considering the possibility.
Many Democrats are preparing for other political timelines, with figures like Sen. Angela Alsobrooks focusing on upcoming elections in 2026. The overall environment suggests a competitive and uncertain race for Harris in influencing her decision-building process for future candidacy.
