Amy Acton, former health director and Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, faced a situation involving a Republican political activist at her campaign event in Harrison, Ohio, last Saturday. The activist, equipped with a camera, questioned Acton about her refusal to debate Republican challenger Vivek Ramaswamy. Acton’s staff intervened, preventing the cameraman from reaching her.
The incident adds to ongoing criticisms from Ramaswamy’s supporters, who accuse Acton of avoiding debates. This comes as the campaign for both candidates enters its final stages.
Dr. Amy Acton, why do you refuse to debate your opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy?
The interviewer asked, but Acton’s staff insisted, “No photos, no videos,” repeatedly. During the encounter, the cameraman’s equipment was briefly knocked out of frame, and he cautioned the staff to be careful.
Acton, who declined to answer, has avoided debates, even after Ramaswamy accepted a CNN invitation. Her campaign asserts this decision stems from not wanting to give a platform to what they describe as baseless accusations and personal attacks. These attacks include her previous role in Ohio’s COVID response, past personal issues, and misleading AI-generated ads.
Ramaswamy, ignoring Acton’s objections, expressed doubt in her ability to govern Ohio. He criticized her for not addressing voter questions and choosing not to debate. Ramaswamy further highlighted her tenure as Ohio’s health director and recent controversies noted in police reports.
While Acton’s campaign has not commented on the incident directly, she remains focused on interacting with Ohio residents without engaging in debates with negative rhetoric.
Having secured the Democratic nomination, Acton will confront Ramaswamy in Ohio’s general election on November 3.
