David Crowley, Milwaukee County executive, has rejoined the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor just two weeks after withdrawing his candidacy. Crowley’s return comes with a significant endorsement from outgoing Governor Tony Evers.

Evers initially did not endorse any candidate in the race, but has now thrown his support behind Crowley. This endorsement aims to strengthen the party’s position for the upcoming November elections. Crowley emphasized the need to build a broad coalition to win the election. Evers’ endorsement signifies his belief in Crowley’s leadership capabilities and his potential for victory. Although Evers was in Africa during the event, he expressed his support for Crowley on social media, praising his achievements in job creation and fiscal management.

Crowley reenters a competitive primary against Francesca Hong, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, state Senator Kelda Roys, and Joel Brennan. He aims to present a more aggressive campaign strategy in the final weeks, leveraging Evers’ backing and a rejuvenated volunteer force.

Crowley commented on the potential to not only succeed in the primary but also prevent Republican Tom Tiffany from implementing a radical agenda in Wisconsin. The primary will test the direction of Democratic voters amid challenges faced in other states like California, where the race to replace Governor Gavin Newsom was tumultuous.

Crowley’s campaign draws upon his personal history, including his family’s past struggles with homelessness. He previously served in the state Assembly before becoming Milwaukee County executive, as the first Black and youngest person ever in that role.

The Democratic primary winner will face Republican Tom Tiffany in the general election, who currently faces minimal competition within his own party. Tiffany criticized Crowley’s leadership, likening Democratic disarray to a comedic crash.
