Dave Matthews, known for his role as the lead singer of the Dave Matthews Band, expressed strong criticism towards Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a concert. Matthews labeled ICE agents as “a–holes” as he spoke to the audience.

At the concert, Matthews questioned the justification for violence, saying, “I don’t know why we let people make excuses for why we should kill each other.” He reflected on why society may have lost its way, suggesting that perhaps humanity has always had violent tendencies but has become more efficient at creating lethal tools.

“Anyway, I wanted to say his name… this father and grandfather who was murdered by ICE in Houston, Texas,” Matthews said. He referred to Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was reportedly shot by ICE agents.

According to an ICE announcement, the incident unfolded when Araujo, a Mexican citizen, allegedly attempted to strike ICE officers with his vehicle during a traffic stop in Houston. Officers attempted the stop around 6:50 a.m., and Araujo allegedly used his vehicle aggressively, prompting an officer to fire in “self-defense.”

Matthews previously criticized ICE after activist Renee Good was killed in Minneapolis during a confrontation with ICE agents. In a video shared on social media, Matthews expressed his opposition to tax funding for ICE and advocated for supportive community practices.

“Murdered in front of her fellow citizens in Minneapolis,” Matthews said of Good, condemning the events and the narratives presented by authorities.

A recent vigil in Houston held in memory of Araujo involved community members holding signs that read “ICE OUT OF HOUSTON.” Despite requests, ICE did not immediately provide comments on the situation.
