Danny DeVito Recalls Wild ‘Taxi’ Parties

When the cameras stopped rolling on “Taxi,” the cast, led by Danny DeVito, shifted into party mode. DeVito recounted how the cast members and celebrity guests transformed the set into an all-night party scene. Music blasted until sunrise, and the gatherings featured “crudité and cocaine,” reflecting the chaotic spirit of the ’80s.

During an appearance on the “All the Smoke” podcast, DeVito explained, “The parties were like ragers. We had rudimentary refreshments like crudité and kept the energy high with cocaine. It was the ’80s and things were wild.”

The guest list extended beyond the “Taxi” cast. Celebrities like Robin Williams, Michael Jackson, and John Belushi joined the festivities. Even cast members from shows like “Laverne & Shirley” made appearances. Michael Jackson would sit in the booth, avoiding the audience but enjoying the spectacle.

So then we would transition right from the show that we finished, like, 10:30, 11. And immediately go up and blare the music… until the sun came up,

DeVito recalled how the celebrations quickly began once filming ended, continuing until dawn. “Our only commitment was to be at work by noon on Monday,” he noted.

DeVito became a household name through his role as Louie De Palma on “Taxi,” a show that aired from 1978 to 1983. The sitcom’s ensemble cast included Judd Hirsch, Marilu Henner, Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Conaway, and Andy Kaufman. DeVito’s portrayal of the sharp-tongued dispatcher earned him Emmy and Golden Globe awards, marking his big break.

Discussing the experience, DeVito reflected, “It was an incredible start to my career. Working with dedicated, funny people who never gave up was inspiring. They pushed us to perform until the last moment.”

After “Taxi,” DeVito pursued a successful career as an actor, director, and producer. His notable works include “Twins,” “Batman Returns,” and “Matilda.” Since 2006, he has entertained a new generation as Frank Reynolds on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
