Daniel Harding Named New Music Director of Los Angeles Philharmonic

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced Daniel Harding as its new music director, taking over from Gustavo Dudamel in August. Dudamel is moving to the New York Philharmonic. Harding will start a six-year contract in the fall of 2027, conducting up to a dozen concerts each season.

Harding first conducted the L.A. Phil in 1997 at the Ojai Festival, marking the start of his career in the U.S. He has since been a valued guest conductor for the orchestra. He became prominent in the international orchestral scene, with roles in major orchestras across Europe and Asia.

Born in Oxford, England, Harding began assisting Simon Rattle at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at age 17. He later led orchestras in Scandinavia, Germany, Paris, Japan, China, and Rome. His varied discography reflects his wide range of interests in music.

The L.A. Phil is known for appointing young, talented conductors who grow into major stars. Zubin Mehta, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Dudamel all started in their twenties or early thirties. The orchestra serves a diverse community and embraces innovation, making the choice of a music director significant.

At 50, Harding brings experience and a unique vision. He is recognized for his professionalism and passion for both music and flying. In an interview, Harding mentioned his enthusiasm for challenges.

If I didn’t think L.A. would be a challenge, I wouldn’t want to come, Harding stated from his Paris home.

L.A. Phil President and CEO Kim Noltemy expressed that orchestra members overwhelmingly supported Harding. His experience and rapport with the orchestra members were significant factors in his selection.

Harding will navigate a complex environment, as the orchestra covers classical to avant-garde music, education, and venue management. Former directors like Mehta and Salonen hold honorary titles, with Salonen also creating projects for the orchestra.

Harding’s relationships with Salonen, Dudamel, and Anna Handler, the conductor-in-residence, suggest a smooth transition. He aims to weave his ideas into the orchestra’s existing framework while maintaining its vast ambitions. Harding also plans upcoming projects for the orchestra, like a YOLA tour in 2029.

Harding will split his time between Paris and Los Angeles, staying with the National Academy of Santa Cecilia at least until 2029. He also plans to continue flying for Air France, reflecting his love for new experiences.
