President Donald Trump announced plans for a monumental 250-foot arch in Washington, D.C. This proposed structure will serve dual purposes as a triumphal arch and a military complex. Trump’s statement on Truth Social emphasized the need for military operations at the site to ensure national security.

“At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch… into a top-grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch,” Trump wrote. He outlined that the arch would feature facilities for drones, snipers on the roof and plaza, and stores of sniper ammunition.

The planned location is between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, making it a contentious project. With a height twice that of the Lincoln Memorial, concerns have been raised about its impact on the area. More than 100,000 people have shared their opinions with the National Park Service, which is reviewing the proposal.

Legal battles have also emerged. U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan instructed the government to notify the court 48 hours before any construction could begin. This requirement is in place to prevent unauthorized activities before securing final approval from the National Park Service.

Opposition includes a lawsuit from Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian. They argue the arch would desecrate Arlington National Cemetery’s grounds and claim the president needs Congressional approval for such a project.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum previously stated that the administration intended to commence work on the arch within two weeks. This announcement came despite pending approvals from the National Capital Planning Commission and other federal agencies. Judge Chutkan’s order followed swiftly to prevent premature action.

In his Truth Social post, Trump remarked, “There will be no facility like this anywhere in the World. Out of the 59 top cities and Capitals, Washington, D.C., IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD THAT DOES NOT HAVE A TRIUMPHAL ARCH, but it will now and, by far, the greatest of them all!”
