“For so many people, Israel is not a place. It’s an idea,” Mamdani remarked in the 2023 “Here & Everywhere: The Solidarity Roundtables” podcast. He criticized American politicians for their unwavering support for Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Critics argue this pattern is consistent with Mamdani’s previous criticisms of Israel, creating friction with the Jewish community. Amid this backdrop, Mamdani’s administration is considering if New York has the legal grounds to arrest Netanyahu during his visit.
