Delaware voters head to the polls for the final primary of the 2026 election cycle. This season has seen significant victories by progressives and socialists over establishment Democratic rivals, alongside President Donald Trump’s maintained influence in Republican contests, despite some setbacks.
Democratic Senator Chris Coons and State Attorney General Kathy Jennings each face primary opponents. Democratic Representative Sarah McBride is unopposed in her primary. These figures are preparing for the general election when Republicans aim to break the Democrats’ stronghold on statewide offices in Delaware.
Progressive Wins Upset Democratic Party
Delaware’s nominating contests conclude a primary season that has upended the Democratic Party. Challengers backed by left-wing and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have claimed victories, sometimes removing long-serving incumbents.
A year after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shook the political landscape with a primary victory, the far-left gained momentum again in June. Several incumbents and establishment figures lost to left-wing candidates.
DSA member Melat Kiros defeated 15-term incumbent Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado. Darializa Avila Chevalier unseated five-term Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat of New York. In August, statewide Senate primary victories included Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, and state Rep. Angie Nixon in Florida.
Despite setbacks like Francesca Hong’s defeat in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial primary, the left significantly strengthened its influence, advocating for policies such as abolishing ICE and promoting a single-payer healthcare system.
“Progressives have built a coalition with a message that presents an acceptable alternative to the status quo,” said veteran strategist Joe Caiazzo.
Trump’s Influence in Republican Primaries
In Republican nominating battles, President Trump claims his endorsements remain potent. His assertion is backed by data from the Fox News Trump Primary Endorsement Tracker, showing success in Senate GOP primaries and a strong record in House nominations.
Trump has reshaped the GOP, bolstering the populist MAGA and America First wings. Although five of his gubernatorial picks failed in Republican primaries, including prominent figures like Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Trump’s influence endures.
“An endorsement from Trump provides a major boost in a Republican primary, but doesn’t guarantee victory,” commented GOP strategist Ryan Williams.
Final Contests in Delaware
The primary season concludes in Delaware, which kicked off on March 3 in Texas, North Carolina, and Arkansas. Democratic Senator Chris Coons seeks a third Senate term facing challengers from the University of Delaware and other settings. He faces opposition from figures like Jeff Appelhans and Mary Louve.
Former State Senator Michael Katz and Col. John Shulli compete for the Republican nomination. Representative Sarah McBride aims for a second House term unopposed. Republicans Joseph Arminio, Earl Cooper, and John Whalen vie for their party’s nomination.
Attorney General Kathy Jennings faces challenges from attorney Dwayne Bensing and advocate Patty Rickman. For the GOP, David Graham remains unopposed.
