Protest Arises Following Cunningham’s Comments

During the Indiana Fever’s 105-95 victory over the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night, a protest took place outside Climate Pledge Arena. The demonstration both supported Sophie Cunningham and endorsed state initiatives IL26-638 and IL26-001. These initiatives aim to exclude transgender students from participating in girls’ athletics and expand the state’s “Parents’ Bill of Rights.”

Media Access Restricted

Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark were unavailable for postgame interviews concerning the rally. Instead, Kelsey Mitchell, Monique Billings, and head coach Stephanie White addressed the media. Cunningham faced boos from Storm fans during the game due to her comments in favor of barring transgender women from women’s sports.

Team’s Stance on the Rally

“Neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers,” said a Fever public relations representative. “Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united in that mission.”

Seattle Storm’s Response

Storm head coach Sonia Raman emphasized the team’s commitment to inclusivity. “Seattle and this organization and Climate Pledge, we always want to be an area where people feel welcome coming into this building,” Raman stated. She praised the successful collaboration with Climate Pledge and security to ensure a safe and inclusive environment.

Opposition to Initiatives 638 and 001

Heather Weiner, spokesperson for No Hate in Washington State, expressed the coalition’s stance against the initiatives. “Washington State is a very caring, inclusive place. We don’t always agree, but we do agree against hate, and we will come together about that,” Weiner remarked.
