ICE Officer Heroically Rescues Drowning Child in Florida

An officer from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made a quick decision that saved a child’s life in Florida. This act of heroism occurred amidst ongoing criticism of the agency. Gregory Simmonds, an officer with ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Tampa, was at a community pool in Pasco County when he noticed a child struggling in the water.

Surveillance footage from the pool shows Simmonds swiftly jumping into the pool, fully clothed, to save the child who was unconscious and floating. He brought the child to the poolside where resuscitation efforts were successful. The child is now expected to recover fully, according to ICE.

Acting Assistant DHS Secretary Lauren Bis praised the officer’s quick response, stating, “This officer swiftly sprung to action and delivered life-saving medical care to this 6-year-old who drowned.” She emphasized the dedication of ICE agents, urging politicians who criticize them to recognize their contributions.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office also commended Simmonds, noting his courage and quick thinking as crucial to the child’s survival. Cpl. J. Leathers highlighted that Simmonds’ actions showed exceptional courage and selflessness.

Simmonds’ brave act is part of a series of life-saving interventions by DHS officers. In another recent case, an agent at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York helped save a 1-year-old in medical distress. Senator Markwayne Mullin acknowledged the agent’s rapid response.

Despite facing protests and criticism, ICE officers continue their work. Protests at New Jersey’s Delaney Hall have included demonstrators labeling them negatively. In February, off-duty ICE agents assisted in saving another child from drowning in a Minnesota hotel pool.

The ongoing dedication of ICE officers emphasizes their commitment to public safety and their bravery in critical situations.
