A recent report by Politico has induced turbulence in Maine’s Democratic Senate race, implicating candidate Graham Platner. A woman, Jenny Racicot, alleges that Platner, while intoxicated, forced her to have sex in 2021, despite her protests. Platner has denied these allegations, labeling them as false, and is currently contemplating the future of his campaign.
Platner stated, “Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we’re taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.” He communicated his response through a video on social media.
Racicot, who was involved in an intermittent relationship with Platner, claims the encounter was not consensual. She has since ceased communication with him, citing the incident as the reason. A message left for Racicot seeking her comment has gone unanswered, and Platner’s campaign team remains unresponsive to media inquiries.
Despite Platner’s denial, the backlash has been immediate. U.S. Representative Ro Khanna from California, previously a steadfast supporter even amidst other allegations, withdrew his endorsement. Khanna remarked, “These allegations are very serious and credible. Graham Platner should drop out from the race.” Similarly, Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego and the Democratic-leaning group End Citizens United have rescinded their support.
Platner, a first-time candidate, secured the Democratic primary with considerable backing from the party’s left wing. However, his candidacy was contentious due to alleged past controversial actions, including a tattoo associated with Nazi symbolism and questionable social media behavior.
In response to the Politico report, public figures like Hasan Piker have also shifted their stance. Piker, a commentator, emphasized during a Twitch stream that the nature of the allegations makes Platner’s position untenable.
Governor Janet Mills, who previously participated in the Senate race but withdrew citing financial constraints, has notably withheld her endorsement of Platner. Speculation about potential replacements if Platner withdraws has begun, with names like former State Senator Troy Jackson and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows being considered.
The Democratic primary winner may still be replaced on the ballot if Platner chooses to withdraw by July 13, with a replacement needing to be named by July 27.
