The city of Madison, Wisconsin, is witnessing growing protests after a police officer’s fatal shooting of Corey Ruiz, a local resident in his 30s. The incident sparked demands for transparency and accountability.

Authorities identified Ruiz during a press conference, where Madison Police Chief John Patterson faced heated interruptions from protesters. One protester took the microphone, condemning police brutality and demanding the officer’s arrest.

City Council President Sabrina Madison emphasized Ruiz’s family ties, noting, He has a family who loves him. I believe Corey has a child. Despite attempts, officials were unable to reach Ruiz’s family for comments.

Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway stated, I want to be clear: It does not matter who you are or what your past is. You should not lose your life as a result of an encounter with law enforcement. She assured a thorough investigation into the shooting.

Chief Patterson described the situation as an open and active homicide investigation. The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.

The shooting occurred in Madison’s Marquette neighborhood following reports of thefts. Police found Ruiz, who rode away on a bicycle. He was eventually confronted and a struggle ensued, during which police claim Ruiz brandished a knife and injured an officer.

A stun gun was used but deemed ineffective, and the involved officer fired at Ruiz. Notably, none of the officers had body cameras. Social media videos captured the incident.

One verified video shows officers holding Ruiz as shouts of Let go! and He’s got a knife! fill the air. Another shout of Taser! follows. Moments later, an officer appears to fire three rounds at Ruiz, who then collapses.

All four officers present will be on administrative leave while the investigation takes place. Ruiz received on-site medical care but was pronounced dead in the hospital.

The shooting rekindles memories of George Floyd’s murder, reviving critiques of police methods against Black Americans. The location also holds historical significance due to previous police-related fatalities in the area.

A vigil for Ruiz is scheduled to unite the community, with calls to rally local and state leaders for justice. Sabrina Madison questioned, My brain has not been able to put that together as an option because I didn’t see anything that warranted it. She urged for legislative advocacy to reevaluate such protocols.
