Colorado’s political landscape is witnessing a notable shift with Melat Kiros, a socialist candidate, urging more immigrants from the global south to enter public office. Kiros contends this move is essential to challenge what she perceives as the United States’ exploitative global role.
Recently, Kiros participated in the Wa’Ela Tigrai event in Denver, Colorado, where she elaborated on her congressional campaign’s objectives. Having defeated Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary, Kiros seeks to inspire transformative changes by drawing from the experiences of House “Squad” members like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Kiros emphasized the necessity of confronting the current global order. “We must recognize the exploitative nature our country contributes on a global scale,” she stated. She believes effective representation requires individuals who fundamentally understand this dynamic.
“We need more people with a heritage in the global south in office,” Kiros argued. “These are the individuals who can truly understand and address these broader issues.”
The candidate’s campaign has yet to provide additional comments on her recent remarks.
Kiros is part of a broader movement within the Democratic Party, where several candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America have successfully won primary elections against longstanding incumbents.
At the event, Kiros shared her personal experience as an attorney, which fostered her anti-capitalist stance. She reflected on her time in law school, where she realized the system operated as intended, which initially led her to a large law firm for stability. “But that’s no way to live,” she remarked, emphasizing community and cultural resilience.
“I’d rather go down fighting than give up,” Kiros affirmed, regardless of the outcome of her candidacy.
In the past, Kiros faced professional backlash when she was fired from the Sidley Austin law firm. Her termination followed the publication of an open letter criticizing several law firms, including her own, for their stance on antisemitism on college campuses.
