Coffee Shop’s Instagram Post Sparks Controversy With Congressman

A small coffee shop chain in New York City stirred controversy with a social media post criticizing a congressman who visited one of its locations. This incident highlighted ongoing tensions over support for Israel in a progressive and predominantly Jewish congressional district in New York.

Congressman Faces Backlash

Representative Dan Goldman recently visited Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This visit occurred outside his district. Accompanied by his 7-year-old daughter, he came on the final day for early voting in a Democratic primary where Brad Lander challenges him for his seat.

Following his visit, Poetica Coffee took to Instagram, posting a caustic message apparently from the shop’s owner. The post included surveillance footage of Mr. Goldman at the cash register, accompanied by critical commentary. The message condemned him sharply, stating he was not welcome.

Owner’s Sharp Remarks

The Instagram post read, “We see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee.” It cynically questioned whether Mr. Goldman noticed that their coffee was not “genocide juice.” The post continued by declaring the shop’s stance against serving “racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers or anyone in between.” The statement mentioned regret over not recognizing him in order to refuse service.

Goldman’s Response

Mr. Goldman responded directly in the comments. He explained that the visit was brief; he stopped by Poetica so his daughter could use the restroom. In appreciation, he bought a coffee for the employee who assisted them.

Tensions Over Israel Support

Goldman’s support for Israel has become a contentious topic. It remains a significant factor in his campaign for re-election in the 10th District, covering parts of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.
