Clashes Erupt Between Rioters and Police at Newark ICE Facility

Friday night in Newark, New Jersey, saw organized rioters defy State Police orders to move to a designated “First Amendment zone”. This defiance led to a violent confrontation with riot control officers.

The rioters, despite pleas from Governor Mikie Sherrill for their safety against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, refused to relocate. Through a PA system, a police officer tried to direct the crowd. In response, members of the crowd insisted on exercising their rights at the scene.

“For your security, we need you to relocate to the First Amendment zone,” said the officer.

“We will not, we will not, I’m expressing my First Amendment right here,” replied the crowd.

The conflict took place at the Delaney Hall ICE facility. Attempts to disperse the crowd included deploying noise bombs, tear gas, pepper spray, and riot shields. Earlier in the day, police had set up barriers which the rioters used against them.

Governor Sherrill, emphasizing public safety, noted the potential risks associated with ICE activity in the area. She stated that the increased ICE presence posed a threat to the community.

On social media, ICE expressed gratitude for the police. They highlighted the importance of law enforcement support and communicated a zero-tolerance stance towards assaults on officers.

“Thank you, @NJSP for cooperating with us to restore law and order,” ICE posted. “This partnership sends a clear message: assaults, threats, and abuse towards law enforcement officers WILL NOT be tolerated.”

Furthermore, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) thanked local law enforcement for their actions during the clashes. According to DHS, ICE officers faced death threats and assaults from rioters.

The rioters were well-organized, setting up a tent filled with supplies like water bottles. They maintained a provision system at the protest site. Their grievances included claims of mistreatment of detainees at the facility. However, DHS countered these claims by stating detainees are adequately fed and paid for their work.

In response to the unrest, ICE agents and state law enforcement intervened. The confrontation left many vehicles damaged, and participants affected by pepper spray and tear gas. The violent events of Friday marked the seventh consecutive day of protests at the facility.

On the following Saturday morning, counter-protesters and pro-ICE groups gathered. There was a heightened police presence to manage the situation effectively.
