Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable appreciated the All-Star break but couldn’t wait to get back to games. Before Friday’s match against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, Venable expressed his excitement. “The guys work and play hard, offering something entertaining every day,” he said. The White Sox entered the game sharing the American League Central lead with the Cleveland Guardians. This marks the 13th instance the Sox have started the ‘second half’ in first place.

The team has generated excitement throughout the first 95 games. Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas, and Colson Montgomery have been key in hitting home runs. Outfielders Sam Antonacci and Tristan Peters have shown consistent performances. The players are eager to continue their season.

“We’re all excited for the second half,” said All-Star third baseman Vargas. “We’ve set goals and want to reach them.”

Postbreak Challenges Ahead

1. Maintaining Momentum

Before the All-Star break, the Sox focused on staying present. After being swept by the Boston Red Sox, they rebounded by sweeping the Athletics. The message for the second half is to stay committed to their standards, said Venable. “That’s really important.”

Distractions are inevitable. Venable noted the previous All-Star break and upcoming trade deadline talk as potential distractions. “It’s about winning today. Others will always talk, but our focus is necessary,” he emphasized.

2. Trade Deadline Decisions

With the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaching, the Sox might be buyers. General manager Chris Getz remains optimistic. “We feel good about our position. It’s one series at a time. We prepare for all scenarios to improve now and later,” he mentioned.

Pitching is often in demand, and the Sox have used their farm system this season. Tanner McDougal is a prospect making progress. He’s recently started working from the Triple-A Charlotte bullpen. “We’re giving Tanner bullpen exposure to ready him,” said Paul Janish, director of player development.

3. Aiming for the Postseason

The 2021 team won the division after leading at the break and reached the playoffs. Venable pointed out improvements needed on the field. “We evaluate our systems to ensure we don’t forget what got us here,” he said. Venable praised the team for keeping focus.

“We control our efforts and maintain top priorities,” Venable noted. “The players move past previous game results with great attitudes, showing up ready to play.”
