Drew Thorpe showcased dominating performance by allowing one hit and striking out four over five scoreless innings against Triple-A Buffalo. Recovering from Tommy John surgery, Thorpe is seen as a potential pitching option for the Chicago White Sox as they look to bolster their staff in the final games. Manager Will Venable acknowledged the importance of having a strong pool of players ready to step up from the minor leagues.
Venable emphasized, “There’s a number of guys down there that are going to be helpful for us. We’re ensuring that our depth is in a good spot.” Thorpe has made nine starts this year and recorded remarkable stats including a 2.70 ERA with 35 strikeouts and nine walks over 36 2/3 innings. His journey back from injury involved starts at different minor league levels, displaying consistent performance with a 2.55 ERA at Charlotte.
Paul Janish, Director of Player Development, stated, “Coming off injury, Thorpe is consistently throwing and recovering well, putting him in a good place.”
Noah Schultz and David Sandlin are other potential options for the White Sox. Schultz, a first-round pick in 2022, holds a 6.06 ERA in 15 appearances, while showcasing improvement in recent starts for Charlotte with a 1.04 ERA in September. David Sandlin has shown resilience with a 6.93 ERA in five outings, making a significant impact with his recent strong performances.
Janish remarked, “Sandlin’s integrity with his pitches has been impressive and he’s likely in one of the most confident places he’s been recently.”
Janish added, “The macro view for the pitchers in Charlotte is ‘it’s all hands on deck.'” He emphasized that every player needs to be mentally prepared to contribute at the major league level, whether starting or taking on a bulk role.
Highlighting the flexibility, Janish mentioned, “Starting in Charlotte doesn’t preclude them from pitching in bulk roles if called up. The team’s use of such strategies all year ensures none will be caught off guard.”
