Two custodians were tragically found shot to death on Monday inside Mark Twain Elementary School in Chicago. Reports suggest one custodian allegedly shot his co-worker before taking his own life.

The Chicago Police Department reported that a 48-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man were discovered unresponsive just after 3:30 p.m. Both had been shot once in the head. Paramedics transported them to local hospitals, where they were declared deceased.

An unspecified weapon was located at the scene. In response to the incident, School Principal Matthew Moline addressed parents through a letter, explaining that the shots were fired when no students were on the premises.

I am sorry to share that members of our school community were impacted, Principal Moline noted.

SEIU Local 73, the union representing the custodial employees of Chicago Public Schools, confirmed the victims both worked at the elementary school. Trumaine Reeves, Executive Vice President of SEIU Local 73, expressed condolences, stating, The only facts we know right now are that two families have lost a loved one and our prayers are with their families, and the staff, students, and families at Mark Twain Elementary School.

The older custodian was reportedly upset about a pending transfer from the school, according to the Chicago Sun-Times citing a police report. He allegedly shot his co-worker before turning the gun on himself.

Principal Moline’s letter acknowledged the distress caused by the event, assuring the community, We know that this news will be deeply concerning to our families and staff. We will work to provide additional information to the school community as the investigation proceeds.
