“He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do,” the statement on Instagram said. “His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”
Born in Monterey Park, California, Mackie was not only a revered costume designer but also a decorated figure in the industry. His work earned him numerous accolades, including several Emmy Awards for costume design and a Tony Award.
Mackie’s career took off in the early 1960s, and over his extensive tenure, he created stunning gowns for Diana Ross and the Supremes. Stars such as Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand, and Elton John also adorned his designs.
The designer gained particular fame as the costume designer for “The Carol Burnett Show.” His partnership with Cher became legendary, as she sported his creations in her “If I Could Turn Back Time” music video and on various red carpets.
