Canadian PM Reacts to U.S. Tariff Decision

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods after trade negotiations failed. Carney labeled these tariffs as a ‘miscalculation’ by the Trump administration, citing ‘uneconomic’ and ‘unfair’ demands as the cause of the breakdown in talks. The tariffs, amounting to 50%, impact approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports into the U.S., according to the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office. These tariffs apply to items ranging from hockey sticks to materials, liquors, and clothing.

Carney announced that Canada is planning a targeted response, imposing tariffs on U.S. goods concentrated in sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. These Canadian tariffs will be effective from September 8.

In an interview on Fox News, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated, ‘We don’t have new talks planned with the Canadians. We’ve said enough, and so we’ve taken countermeasures.’ Asserting that the U.S. would respond to Canadian retaliation, Greer’s statement highlights the escalating tensions between these nations.
