Chicago Bears fans faced a tense moment on Sunday when their star quarterback, Caleb Williams, suffered a worrying injury during the fourth quarter of a game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Bears were trailing 6-3 and pushing for a score when Williams attempted a left roll. As Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel approached for a tackle, Williams evaded him but fell to the ground after his hamstring seemed to give out.
The injury was initially identified as non-contact, raising concerns of an Achilles tear or another severe muscle injury. Fans feared the worst given the visible pain Williams was in. However, early reports after the game provided hope, suggesting the absence might be brief. Confirmation awaited the results of Monday’s MRI.
“Tests confirmed Caleb Williams avoided significant hamstring damage,” reported NFL insider Tom Pelissero. “The team remains optimistic, not ruling him out for the upcoming Week 3 “Monday Night Football” game against the Eagles.”
This is positive news for Chicago. Williams’ injury had fans and the team holding their breath as he lay in considerable pain, later needing assistance off the field. As the face of the franchise and a top young quarterback, seeing him perform so well earlier this season made the injury more concerning.
In the Bears’ season opener, a 59-37 victory over the Panthers, Williams excelled, completing 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards, scoring two touchdowns, and adding another 65 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. Despite challenging weather conditions, Williams performed admirably against the Vikings, ending with 16 completions out of 26 attempts for 138 yards, an interception, and 42 rushing yards.
While the update on Williams doesn’t promise his participation against the Eagles, it provides optimism. At worst, he might miss a single game. After facing Philadelphia, the Bears’ schedule includes a home game against the Jets and away games against the Packers and Falcons.
