Caleb Williams’ Actions Raise Eyebrows During National Anthem

During the Monday Night Football game between the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles, an unusual scene unfolded. As the Mariachi Herencia de México performed the “Star-Spangled Banner,” players, coaches, and spectators stood along the sidelines. However, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams drew attention for not following suit.

While the anthem played, TV viewers saw Williams pacing the Bears’ sideline as if preoccupied. Though not playing in the game due to a hamstring strain sustained against the Minnesota Vikings, his movement caught notice.

For context, the patriotic Code of Conduct during the anthem has been clear since 1942. It states that all present, except those in uniform, should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. This was later updated in 1976 to include details about men wearing headdress should remove them.

During the rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all persons present except those in uniform should stand at attention, face the flag, and place the right hand over the heart and men with headdress should remove the headdress and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face the music and act in the same manner as if the flag were displayed.

Williams might not be informed of this code. Some speculate the education system today may not emphasize traditional American values. At 24 years old, Williams might not appreciate these traditions. His actions last season—talking to a teammate during the anthem—had already pointed to this trend.

This incident sparked varied reactions on social media. Some found it disrespectful, while others dismissed it as insignificant. Ultimately, many fans are more concerned about Williams’ return to the field than his sideline conduct. However, those waiting to see him play will need patience.
