WNBA standout Caitlin Clark is set to return for the Wednesday matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks. This follows her hiatus due to a persistent back injury. However, her return is accompanied by significant strategic decisions from the Indiana Fever’s head coach, Stephanie White.
Clark was sidelined previously, but now she’s prepared to participate. Reporter Chloe Peterson from Indy Star queried White about Clark’s status for the upcoming game against the Sparks as well as All-Star forward Aliyah Boston’s injury situation. White explained the team’s approach.
“Yeah, [Boston] just did some of the shooting,” White told Peterson. “She’s going to be out tonight, again, with the back-to-back. … Caitlin’s going to be active tonight, AB’s not, and then they’ll flip-flop tomorrow.”
This means Clark will play against the Sparks but will not participate in Thursday’s game with the Phoenix Mercury. In contrast, Boston will not play on Wednesday but will take part on Thursday.
The decision was made shortly after the Fever had an impressive 84-68 victory over the Las Vegas Aces without Clark. Through 17 games this season, Clark has been notable with averages of 21.2 points, 8.2 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per game, contributing greatly during her 30.8 minutes on the court.
What’s the reasoning behind this plan? Clark has consistently shown a desire to play. Even if she feels well enough on Thursday, the preemptive decision has been taken out of her hands. Protecting her health remains a priority for White after Clark’s challenging season.
While the WNBA seeks broader narratives than Clark, her significance is highlighted by television ratings. Fans are eager to see her on the court rather than hear about her absence.
Head coach Stephanie White believes in prioritizing Clark’s health, even if it means facing criticism for ruling her out a day ahead. The decision aims at ensuring her long-term well-being.
