Authorities in South Carolina have confirmed that a body discovered earlier this week belongs to Elena Moore, who disappeared on June 11.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not yet disclosed the cause or manner of Moore’s death. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, and more information is expected to be made public on Monday.
Moore, 39, was last seen leaving a gym in Lexington, a city located west of Columbia with a population of around 23,000. Her body was found on Wednesday afternoon near the gym she was seen departing on the day she vanished.
Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green stated that the initial identification was based on clothing descriptions. He acknowledged that the discovery was the result of a tip generated by media coverage.
Chief Green did not comment on whether foul play was believed to be involved in her disappearance. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is currently in charge of the death investigation. A spokesperson for the department did not provide any response to requests for comment on Friday night.
