Bill Maher Set to Receive Mark Twain Prize at Kennedy Center

Bill Maher, a frequent critic of President Trump, will take the stage on Sunday to receive a comedy award at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Known for his biting commentary, Mr. Maher will accept the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor during a politically charged moment for the arts institution.

The Kennedy Center, once bearing President Trump’s name, is now embroiled in a legal battle concerning the president’s influence on the institution. Recently, a federal judge ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the building’s facade, prompting an appeal from the center.

Maher, a self-described “old-school liberal,” is known for his critiques of both the president and progressive Democrats. On his show, “Real Time With Bill Maher,” he has likened Trump to an emperor, derided his approval ratings and recent Iranian deal, and accused Trump of racist, misogynistic, anti-democratic, and corrupt behavior.

Despite his longstanding criticism, Maher agreed to be honored at the Kennedy Center amid a climate where many artists refuse to participate. The event will premiere on Netflix on July 21, featuring celebrities such as Louis C.K., Jay Leno, Whitney Cummings, Woody Harrelson, John Mellencamp, Arianna Huffington, and Stephen A. Smith. These guests are anticipated to both honor and roast Mr. Maher during the ceremony.
