A couple in Northern California faced a tragic bear attack in their home early on September 19. The black bear, cinnamon-colored, harmed both the homeowners, Jeff and Mallory Wilson, and their French bulldog, Cassie. The animal severely injured the dog, who tried to protect them.
Cassie barked in the early hours, leading Jeff to check their backyard. Upon opening the door, he encountered the bear, which charged at him. This noise woke Mallory, who, upon going outside, was also attacked.
According to a GoFundMe page setup by their friend, the Wilsons suffered significant injuries. Jeff had two broken ribs and numerous wounds from bites and claws. Mallory sustained head and face injuries along with other bites.
Their dog Cassie intervened during the attack but eventually sustained fatal injuries. Despite receiving emergency care, including surgery for wounds on her spine, she died two days after the incident.
Jeff and Mallory Wilson manage Radio Ranch, a ‘glamping’ site in Trinity County. They have experience dealing with wildlife and take precautions to coexist peacefully. However, they described the bear attack as unprovoked and unusual.
“This was an unprovoked and extraordinarily unusual encounter that none of us could have anticipated,” said the couple.
The attack led them to cancel ranch reservations and cooperate with an investigation by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The couple respects wildlife even while grieving Cassie.
The fundraising campaign aims to cover their medical expenses, veterinary costs, property repairs, and additional help during their recovery. By Saturday, it raised over $16,000 of the $20,000 target.
The CDFW notes such bear attacks on humans are uncommon and advises securing potential bear attractants, such as food, around homes.
