Baker Mayfield Stays with the Buccaneers: A Contract Extension Journey

Baker Mayfield Secures New Deal with Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield initially showed no interest in a new contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers upon training camp’s commencement. By season end, Mayfield was expected to move into free agency. The NFL’s financial dynamics have a way of altering situations rapidly.

Record Extension in the NFL

PATRICK MAHOMES has surpassed Dak Prescott as the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback after securing a record extension from the Chiefs, valued at $504.75 million.

Baker Mayfield’s Contract Terms

Mayfield has achieved a three-year contract extension with the Bucs worth $165 million, confirmed by OutKick. This decision demonstrates Tampa Bay’s commitment to retaining Mayfield. The Bucs have confirmed Mayfield’s contract, ensuring his continuity with the team.

With an annual average salary of $55 million, Mayfield aligns with the likes of Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, and Matthew Stafford. This makes him one of the league’s third-highest paid quarterbacks.

Baker Mayfield’s Performance

Mayfield has consistently delivered for the Bucs, with 95 touchdown passes across 51 starts. The Bucs’ investment reflects their belief in his capabilities and potential.

Contract Negotiations and Changes

Initially, Mayfield and the Bucs faced differences during training camp in July. The team proposed a contract extension which Mayfield declined, questioning the valuation of his worth. These disagreements led Mayfield to set a personal deadline for contract discussions, suggesting he might pursue free agency post-season.

There was speculation Mayfield excelled under pressure, with anticipation of superior gameplay during disputes.

The tension was short-lived. The Bucs resumed negotiations, disregarding Mayfield’s deadline, eventually presenting him with a favorable offer. Mayfield’s stance softened as he accepted to stay with his team and the region he favors.

Accepting a contract that matches his valuation is more beneficial than pursuing free agency in 2027.
