Austrian Court Verdict
An Austrian court in Wiener Neustadt has sentenced a 21-year-old man, identified as Beran A., to 15 years in prison for planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert. The attack, intended for Vienna nearly two years ago, was prevented, leading to the cancellation of Swift’s performances in August 2024.
Trial and Admission
During the trial, which began last month, Beran A. admitted to plotting the attack. He expressed remorse in a brief statement to the court before the verdict was reached. The court found him guilty of multiple charges, including planning to attack the concert.
“I would just like to say that I am sorry,”
Details of the Planned Attack
Investigations revealed Beran A.’s intention to harm attendees outside the Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. Swift’s Eras Tour attracted thousands of fans who were left disappointed by the cancellations. Many gathered in Vienna to share their dismay and exchange friendship bracelets in support.
Links to Islamic State Group
Authorities found that Beran A. had connections with members of the Islamic State group. Discussions about acquiring weapons and bomb-making were uncovered. Prosecutors reported that Beran A. sought weapons illegally and pledged allegiance to the militant group.
The police searched his apartment on August 7, 2024, and discovered materials for making bombs. The concerts were scheduled for the following day but were canceled as a precautionary measure.
Singer Taylor Swift addressed the situation through Instagram, expressing regret and fear, acknowledging the disappointment of her fans.
Related Charges and Sentences
Beran A. was tried alongside another 21-year-old, Arda K., whose full identity remains undisclosed. A third suspect, Hasan E., is in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia. The trio allegedly planned simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024 in the name of ISIS.
While only Beran A. was charged for the concert plot, both defendants were convicted of traveling and training for terrorist activities and being part of a terrorist organization. They were also implicated in an attempted murder case tied to an incident involving Hasan E. in Mecca, where he injured security personnel and a civilian.
