Atlanta Mayor Criticizes DNC for Overlooking Southern Voters

Atlanta’s Democratic Mayor Andre Dickens strongly criticized the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) leadership for neglecting Black voters and the Southern region. This criticism followed the DNC’s decision to omit Atlanta from the shortlist to host the 2028 presidential convention.

“The DNC continues to make the wrong choices,” Dickens wrote in a letter, highlighting DNC Chairman Ken Martin after Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia were chosen over Atlanta. Dickens’ sentiment aligns with other Southern Democrats who believe their voters are undervalued by the national party.

Christale Spain, Chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, recently emphasized the importance of the South in shaping the future political landscape. She, along with other Democratic leaders, cautioned against neglecting Black voters, conveying the message that their support is not guaranteed.

“They are afraid to leave their comfort zone,” Dickens stated, accusing the DNC of abandoning the South. Atlanta has not hosted a convention for almost 40 years, contrasting with other regions repeating hosting duties.

The DNC did not directly address Dickens’ letter but reiterated their commitment to the South. DNC Chairman Martin emphasized the strength of the bids from Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia, spotlighting efforts to strengthen ties in the South through an updated nominating calendar placing South Carolina first.

Additionally, the final contenders for hosting the August 2028 convention include Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia, after Atlanta and Chicago were eliminated. The DNC’s decision considered factors like community partnerships, logistical capabilities, and alignment with Democratic values.

Atlanta’s exclusion follows another disappointment, having lost the 2024 convention bid to Chicago. During site evaluations, DNC officials assessed venues like State Farm Arena and Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

In a letter, Martin criticized party leadership for not utilizing the opportunity to show strategic foresight, challenging them to focus on empowering Black voters and consider the Southeast’s importance.
