Astronauts Share Cosmic Views and Daily Life on ISS

At the International Space Station, NASA astronauts have been enjoying spectacular views of the cosmos. Although last week’s solar eclipse wasn’t fully visible from their location, they caught a partial glimpse. They’re eager to observe the upcoming lunar eclipse too. Jack Hathaway, an astronaut on the station, expressed excitement about the possibility.

Jessica Meir, commander of the space station, highlighted the auroras as the most impressive cosmic displays. Recently, a significant solar event led to a stunning view of the northern lights right beneath the station. Meir described the aurora as resembling a snake, with green light reflecting off the station’s exterior.

In addition to cosmic observations, Meir enjoys cooking onboard. She recently participated in a culinary show called “Chez ISS” with crewmate Anil Menon. Menon, who arrived in a Russian capsule, brought along a chef’s toque for these cooking adventures. Meir has also showcased her musical talent by performing with the Boston Pops, her piccolo performance prerecorded in space.

While Hathaway may not engage in culinary or musical activities, he finds plenty to occupy his time, including weekend karaoke sessions with various musical instruments. Both Meir, a marine biologist, and Hathaway, a Navy captain, have been on the space station since February. They will return to Earth with the help of SpaceX after their replacements arrive next month.

Currently, the station houses three Americans, three Russians, and one French astronaut, fostering an international community in space.
