Ketel Marte, the Arizona Diamondbacks standout, rejoined his team on Monday after a two-week absence. His sudden departure led to uncertainty among fans. Marte was restored to the lineup as the designated hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies, despite his unannounced break.
“I’m going to stand in front of my teammates like a man,” Marte expressed via a translator, seeking forgiveness for his absence and recognizing human errors.
Marte left the Diamondbacks in Boston on August 17 without notifying the team. Initially placed on the restricted list, the team later listed knee inflammation as the reason for his absence. Marte took full responsibility, citing it as a personal decision.
“A moment of frustration,” he admitted. “No one made the decision for me, I’m the one that made the decision not to show up,” Marte explained. He acknowledged failing to show up, which impacted his rapport with manager Torey Lovullo.
This incident isn’t isolated. Lovullo revealed it was his fourth unauthorized absence in consecutive seasons. Despite this pattern, Marte returned to a key lineup position ahead of playoff pursuits. Such situations are rare outside Major League Baseball.
During his time away, videos emerged of Marte gambling at Talking Stick Casino in Scottsdale. Criticized for the images, he defended his actions as personal time activities.
“I’ve been injured before, those are things that I do in my personal time,” Marte commented.
When asked to address Arizona fans supporting him, Marte offered silence and a head shake in response.
With the Diamondbacks at 73-65, fighting for a Wild Card slot, Marte’s contribution is valuable. His batting average is .249, with 21 home runs. Bound by a contract until 2031, with no-trade protection, Marte maintains significant influence.
The Diamondbacks hope his powerful skills support them as they push for playoffs. The team remains reliant on his performance, overshadowing accountability concerns.
