Anthropic, an American AI company established in 2021, is stepping towards an initial public offering (IPO). The company, known for its AI model Claude, has confidentially submitted a draft registration statement, Form S-1, to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a proposed IPO.

Anthropic’s announcement states, “This gives us the option to go public after the SEC completes its review.” The IPO’s timing will hinge on market conditions and other influential factors. Currently, the details regarding the number of shares and pricing are not finalized.

The prospect of Anthropic going public marks a significant event in the tech sector. This potential listing is part of a wave of IPOs from tech giants. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, involved in rocketry and AI, shared its financials for an IPO in late May. OpenAI, developer of ChatGPT, is also reportedly eyeing a public listing.

According to analysts at Wedbush Securities, “We believe this represents an opening of the floodgates for the IPO market, which has been relatively dormant for a few years, with these three major conglomerates set to go public later this year.” These industry movements suggest a competitive rush to the public markets within the coming months.

Anthropic’s recent fundraising has elevated its valuation to nearly $965 billion, surpassing OpenAI’s value of $852 billion as of March. This financial milestone occurs amidst growing enthusiasm and concern about AI technology. As companies like Anthropic and OpenAI invest substantially in data centers, related industries such as chip manufacturing are experiencing a surge in stock prices.

Despite this, surveys indicate that the American public remains hesitant about AI’s influence on everyday life.
