Ancient Tomb Discovery Near Cairo Unveils Rich History

On September 9, 2026, an archaeological mission from Egypt and Spain uncovered an ancient tomb near Cairo, belonging to a judge and his father from 4,300 years ago. This discovery occurred at Saqqara, a well-known necropolis located south of Cairo. The tomb dates back to Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi’s Fifth Dynasty, a significant period marked by administrative reform in the 24th century B.C., as noted by the Egyptian tourism and antiquities ministry.

Built for Yunmen, a high-ranking official, the tomb reflects his role in justice administration, where he responded to appeals and complaints from the kingdom’s subjects. Amr al-Tayeb, who leads the Saqqara archaeological site, linked Yunmen’s responsibilities to the ancient concept of Maat, representing truth, justice, and order.

This find was revealed during a summer excavation in the Mariette Cemetery area of northern Saqqara as part of a collaboration between the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. The newly discovered mastaba, a flat-roofed tomb for elite figures, includes two funerary chapels; one for Yunmen, the other for his father, Ity. Ity served as a senior scribe managing agricultural lands and offerings.

Yunmen’s chapel showcases detailed reliefs of farmers, servants with offerings, and scenes of funeral rites, retaining vibrant colors despite millennia of burial beneath sand, the ministry reported. On social media, the ministry emphasized the preservation quality of these scenes, sharing several site images.

“It features exceptionally well-preserved scenes,” the ministry noted.

The archaeological team also discovered a decorated facade with burial inscriptions and formal images of Yunmen. Ity’s chapel contains remnants of painted offering scenes and a symbolic false door, believed to allow the deceased to receive sustenance from the living.

This discovery is part of Egypt’s strategy to highlight archaeological findings to benefit tourism, an essential foreign currency source. In November, Egypt held an official ceremony for the Grand Egyptian Museum’s opening, welcoming foreign leaders. Although planned to open in 2010, various challenges like financial issues, political unrest, pandemic impacts, and regional conflicts delayed the project.
