The trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ ‘Digger’ gives a first look at a film featuring a notable cast including Tom Cruise, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, and Jesse Plemons. The film is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
Tom Cruise transforms himself into Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil tycoon, with extensive use of prosthetics. Rockwell is known for his obsession with wealth and his peculiar, robotic-like cat, Maggie. Despite warnings, he continues operations at an unstable drilling site in Greenland, eventually leading to a catastrophic explosion. This disaster has the potential to cause a tsunami and mass flooding in Europe.
John Goodman portrays President Compson, who, together with his cabinet, rushes to manage the fallout at Digger’s remote estate. Despite a promising cast, ‘Digger’ fails to fully deliver. While the film assembles A-list talent, the performances lack depth, reverting to exaggerated expressions and chaos.
Riz Ahmed’s role as a scientist provides a momentary standout performance, warning of the drilling’s consequences. However, his voice is often drowned out amidst the tumultuous plot. Sandra Hüller’s character, Emma, offers little impact, focusing mainly on lamentations about environmental damage despite her foundation being funded by Digger.
The film attempts to follow in the footsteps of renowned satires like Kubrick’s ‘Dr. Strangelove’ but more closely resembles ‘Don’t Look Up,’ where satire is overshadowed by overt messaging. The visual aesthetics by Emmanuel Lubezki and musical score by Cosmo Sheldrake are strong elements among the film’s shortcomings.
Despite a solid lineup and creative ambitions, ‘Digger’ emerges as a disjointed narrative. Viewers seeking to appreciate the capabilities of its stars may find better value in revisiting ‘Birdman’ or ‘Dr. Strangelove.’
Rated R for pervasive language, ‘Digger’ runs for 2 hours and 9 minutes and is currently showing in theaters.
