An American tourist tragically lost his life after being struck by lightning while climbing Mount Etna in Italy. The incident occurred during the volcano’s active eruption phase.
The tourist, a 30-year-old man, ignored safety advisories by venturing into a restricted area of the volcano. His goal was to reach closer to the summit, as reported by the local newspaper La Sicilia.
Unfortunately, he found himself amidst a sudden thunderstorm and was struck by lightning. Emergency services responded promptly after receiving a call close to 8 p.m. local time. Firefighters reached the tourist with a helicopter, providing immediate assistance.
He was rushed to Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania. Despite efforts, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival in the emergency room.
Mount Etna, situated on Sicily in Italy, holds the title as Europe’s highest and most persistently active volcano. It has been erupting since early August, leading to significant disruptions, including the cancellation of many flights.
