A significant incident occurred at Miami International Airport when an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and airport officials reported that the plane, Prime Air Flight 7598, struck several vehicles and caught fire around 2 p.m. local time.
The cargo plane became disabled at the northwest end of the airport, according to officials. Fire Rescue units reported that over 60 units were dispatched to handle the situation. The crash resulted in heavy flames and smoke, prompting emergency crews to extinguish the fire and assess multiple patients involved.
“Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing. Firefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue stated.
Authorities have yet to announce any details regarding injuries or fatalities. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital that the plane experienced an incident while trying to land but did not provide further specifics. They emphasized that Amazon’s priority is the safety and well-being of all involved and that they are cooperating with local authorities to understand what happened.
The Federal Aviation Administration stated that 21 Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300, departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The emergency call was logged around 1:55 p.m.
Air Traffic Control System Command Center initially instituted a ground stop at the airport until at least 4:30 p.m. All runways and taxiways at the airport were closed as of 3:00 p.m. Secretary Sean Duffy of the Department of Transportation noted that first responders were on the scene assessing the situation.
“We’ve issued a full ground stop at Miami International while first responders assess the scene after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway. If you’re traveling through the area, please expect significant delays and potential cancellations,” Duffy stated.
