Algeria’s Comeback Victory
Algeria achieved a significant second-half comeback, preventing Jordan from securing their first World Cup victory. This win also confirmed Lionel Messi’s Argentina as winners of Group J. Jordan, making their tournament debut, lost 3-1 to Austria earlier but had put up a commendable fight for much of the match.
Nizar Al-Rashdan scored for Jordan with an impressive finish, taking advantage of a chance following Musa Al-Taamari’s mishit pass. Algeria’s goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, managed to get a hand on the ball but could not stop the goal. At that point, Jordan had a theoretical chance to top the group by winning their final game against Argentina.
Algeria, however, turned the match around. Goals by Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri secured a 2-1 win, marking Algeria’s first World Cup victory in 12 years. This result allowed Messi’s Argentina to progress as group leaders.
Algeria’s Performance
“Algeria were persistent all night,” said analysts Charlotte Harpur and Laurie Whitwell.
Algeria displayed consistent effort throughout the game, creating several opportunities. They frequently used long passes toward their captain, Riyad Mahrez. Despite his perfect runs, Mahrez struggled to convert these chances due to tight defensive work by Jordan, led by goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila.
Despite their visually appealing passing, Algeria lacked finish. Ironically, set pieces became decisive, with their two goals stemming from corner kicks. Algeria’s equalizer marked a turning point, as they seemed the likely victors with Jordan dropping deeper defensively. Gouiri’s awareness in reacting first to second balls decided the match.
Overall, Algeria appeared more cohesive across the field. Although Zidane’s miss on Jordan’s opener was a blemish, their comprehensive team effort prevailed over Jordan’s counter-attacks. The statistical evidence supported Algeria’s deserving win, showcasing a higher expected goals value and overwhelming advantage in shots and possession.
Zidane’s Performance in Focus
Luca Zidane sought to improve following a challenging World Cup debut against Argentina. During the match with Jordan, he faced another familiar difficulty. Despite getting a hand on Al-Rashdan’s shot, Zidane couldn’t prevent the ball from finding the net.
His previous experience facing Messi also showcased areas for improvement, with Zidane unable to prevent Messi’s opener or subsequent tap-in. However, Zidane’s overall performance since his debut in a qualifier against Uganda has been solid, with several clean sheets.
In contrast, Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila exemplified effective goalkeeping for most of the game. However, Algeria’s pressure ultimately proved too much, with Abulaila unable to stop Benbouali’s header nor respond quickly enough to Gouiri’s decisive goal.
The Implications for Messi and Argentina
Algeria’s comeback not only revived their tournament hopes but also secured Argentina’s position as Group J winners. The possibility of Jordan topping the group vanished with Algeria’s win. With Jordan now eliminated, Algeria faces Austria next to decide which team will advance to play the Group H winner in Los Angeles on July 6.
Currently, Spain leads Group H, with Uruguay in second. Meanwhile, the best-performing third-placed team will play a group winner from other groups in various U.S. cities, with the specifics to be determined soon.
