Alabama residents are rallying behind Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library following her death at 80. The program’s growth is supported by a proposed specialty license plate, which residents are keenly backing to honor the country star’s legacy. This initiative promotes reading among children by providing free books from birth to age five.
Surge in Support for Imagination Library
Kaelyn Christian, the Alabama state director for the Imagination Library, noted a significant increase in interest for the license plate. Initially, there were only about 40 pre-commitments, but this number rapidly climbed to over 550 by Wednesday afternoon. The target is to reach 1,000 commitments to begin production.
“It’s been amazing,” Christian remarked about the recent spike in commitments.
Each plate costs around $50, with the funds directed to support the Imagination Library in the driver’s county. This annual fee provides an ongoing donation method, directly benefiting local programs.
The Legacy of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
Dolly Parton initiated the Imagination Library in 1995 to honor her father, who was unable to read or write. Since its inception, over 300 million books have been distributed worldwide. In Alabama, about 114,000 children currently benefit from the program, with recent spikes in new registrations.
Christian highlighted that funds from a single license plate could finance the cost of sending books to two children each month for nearly two years. The tangible impact is evident, as many Alabama families otherwise struggle to provide books for their homes.
Personal Anecdotes Highlight Program’s Success
Christian shared stories of how the Imagination Library has affected lives. Her own son, approaching five years old, eagerly awaits each new delivery, cherishing the books received monthly. One mother expressed interest in the license plate to continue the joy of book deliveries for other children, as her kids graduated from the program.
For many families, this program is a crucial resource. Christian recounted a family’s story where participation in the program fostered a child’s voracious love for reading, resulting in reading 200 books annually by middle school.
Future and Impact of the Library Program
Christian emphasized the significance of the specialty plate, noting its potential to stabilize funding and support local program operations. She praised the local partners who are vital in advocating, enrolling children, and promoting the library’s mission.
In 2023, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey endorsed the Imagination Library’s statewide expansion, which achieved complete coverage in all 67 counties by early 2025. The state government contributes half of the necessary funds for each child enrolled.
