Currently sitting atop the division are the Texas Rangers, who maintain a record of 55-54. This may not be a strong showing compared to other divisions, where such a record would place them third. Despite lacking high-profile players, the Rangers boast a decent offense, hitting .245, placing them 12th in the league. Notably, their position as 17th in home runs suggests they focus more on hitting for average rather than power. However, they rank 23rd in runs scored, indicating many missed scoring opportunities.
The Rangers are primarily built around their pitching rotation rather than their offense. This solid pitching lineup could prove advantageous if they reach the postseason, making them a formidable contender. Nathan Eovaldi, one of their starting pitchers, enters this game with a 10-8 record, a 4.05 ERA, and a 1.17 WHIP. His consistency is evident, as he typically allows three or four earned runs per start. Facing Houston once this season, he allowed five earned runs over seven innings.
On the other hand, the Houston Astros are also contenders for the postseason despite facing a challenging year. With the same number of wins as the Rangers, their 55 losses put them just half a game behind Texas. Yordan Alvarez stands as a potential MVP candidate, offering the Astros hope, yet the team does not appear World Series-ready. Talks of player trades surface, although limited changes are anticipated, as they aim to secure the division title by season’s end.
Pitching for the Astros is Hunter Brown, who has faced a shortened season due to injury, accumulating just 47 innings pitched. Despite this, his performance has been commendable, holding a 2-1 record with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Although his starts have varied in quality, he pitched effectively against the Rangers recently, conceding three earned runs over six innings.
Alvarez has excelled against Eovaldi, posting 12 hits in 25 at-bats, including five extra-base hits, suggesting a potential for scoring more bases today.
Given the current form of both pitchers, despite their strengths, opting for an over 7.5 total run bets might be favorable. Neither team demonstrates overwhelming offensive prowess, yet their pitchers have shown susceptibility to being hit. Counting on at least eight runs seems plausible under these conditions.
