Bogota, Colombia—Abelardo de la Espriella, leading the opposition Defenders of the Motherland movement, emerged victorious in Colombia’s presidential election by a narrow margin in the preliminary ‘quick count.’ With over 99% of the votes tallied, de la Espriella holds 49.7% compared to his left-wing rival Iván Cepeda’s 48.7%, leaving the remaining ballots as blank votes. This close result means the final certification is pending an official manual count over subsequent days.

Historically, Colombia’s quick counts have closely aligned with final certified results. In response to the electoral tally, de la Espriella expressed optimism on social media, stating that ‘a new stage for our country begins, built on the democratic will of millions who believe in a prosperous Colombia full of opportunities.’

Iván Cepeda, aligned with outgoing President Gustavo Petro, acknowledged the quick count but challenged results from approximately 33,000 ballot boxes. Petro highlighted alleged irregularities in the count and reminded citizens that no proclamation of victory for either candidate is possible until the initial count is ratified.

Security was a paramount concern during the election. Colombia’s prolonged armed conflict, exacerbated by the expansion of group control over drug trafficking and illegal mining operations, has resulted in displacement and insecurity.

Abelardo de la Espriella, endorsed by former President Trump, is known for his hardline security stance. He promises military offensives against guerrilla groups and intensified attacks on drug-smuggling methods, alongside building ‘mega prisons.’ He also aims to reopen the countryside to fracking and reverse Petro’s ban on new hydrocarbon and mining contracts.

A businessman and criminal defense attorney, de la Espriella represented contentious clients, including a pyramid scheme founder and Alex Saab, who faced money-laundering charges. Beyond law and politics, he showcases a flamboyant media persona, singing songs in promotional videos and has dubbed himself ‘El Tigre.’

Additionally, de la Espriella owns luxury cars and jets, often promoting a fashion line. Seeking stronger U.S. relations, he gained Trump’s endorsement, followed by congratulatory messages from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

This election outcome highlights a potential rightward shift in Latin America, with numerous countries now governed by far-right or center-right leaders.
